I was visiting the wonderful forum Bill Cory has put together, www.kitguitarforum.com, and someone had posted some very wild looking wood on Ebay, called Curly Mango. I had never tried any or even heard of it before, so decided to put a bid on it. The price was surprisingly low, and I ended up winning the bid. After a week and a half, the wood showed up, and boy was it striking! I decided to run it through the planer and get it planed to thickness, and clean it up a little, and the figure popped even more! Here is what it looked like after some machining:

All I did after planing the wood was wipe it with Naptha to show how a clear finish will effect it. There are some amazing colors and hues and swirls in this wood, but it is far softer than I expected. It immediately began to potato chip on me, and a week of humidifying and "stickering", as it is called, has not improved it. I can, however, iron it flat just as easily as I can bend the sides, so it should not be a problem. |
